BARBECUE PARTY YESTERDAY EVENING
With a seasonable warmth in the air, and only a slight breeze, Dr Anthony James and Mrs James, of Beimont lane, were fortunate in their choice of yesterday evening for a barbecue. The guests of honour were Dr R. W. Medlicott and Mrs Medlicott, who will leave on Sunday on the first stage of their journey to America, where Dr Medlicott will further his studies under a Rockefeller Foundation scholarship. Although a barbecue was undoubtedly a novel experience for a majority of the guests, both host and hostess were obviously well versed in the mysteries of this type of cookery. Mrs James, who was at one time head of the Health and Beauty Movement in the north, has presided at barbecues with as many as 150 guests and both have attended many such parties in America and England. The barbecue pit—in this case some four feet square and about 18 inches deep —was half-filled with 'glowing embers, and steak and cutlets were soon sizzling in an appetising manner on the large grill. Plates were filled and guests were soon seated informally on the lawn or under the trees. The lovely garden with its well-stocked beds and borders was a charming setting for such an occasion. Those present were Dr R. W. Medlicott and Mrs Medlicott, Dr A. S. Moody and Mrs Moodv. Dr R. Kirk and Mrs Kirk, Mr and Mrs L. M. Wright, Mr and Mrs George Chance, Dr G. McLachlan and Mrs McLachlan, Dr M. Gilmour and Mrs Gilmour, Mr and Mrs C. Parker (Christchurch), Mr and Mrs Guy Tapley, Dr P. Louden and Mrs Louden, Mr and Mrs I. Cairney, Mr and Mrs G.
