HEAVY ENTRIES IN FOR TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS

PA WELLINGTON, Dec. 18. Unusually heavy entries, in some cases a need for whittling down and several tangles, confronted the secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, Mr A. C. W. Mantell-Harding, after entries closed yesterday for the 1948-49 New Zealand championships. A surprising number of leading players had not arranged Doubles partners, asking to be paired. The Men’s Singles entries totalled 90, with a limit of 64. Other totals were: Women’s Singles 46. Men’s Doubles 47, Women’s Doubles 22, Mixed Doubles 48. . . u For the New Zealand junior championships the Boys’ Singles entries exceeded the limit of 64, and the Boys’ Doubles were also over the limit of 32. The totals were: Boys’ Singles 72, Doubles 36, Girls’ Singles 64, Doubles 30, Mixed Doubles 52.
