OBITUARY
MR L. C. ANDERSON The death occurred in Oamaru recently of Mr Louis Christian Anderson. He was born at Stavangar, Norway, in 1860, and in his early days followed in his father’s footsteps as a sailor. As a young man he came to New Zealand. and was engaged in mining and gold dredging in the Wakatipu district, where he became manager of the Sew Hoy Gold Dredging Company. In 1896 he moved to Alexandra, where he managed several dredges, the most successful of them being the Manuherikia dredge, which on one occasion in 1904 had a return of 3430 z, for a week’s work—a record which still stands in the district. Later he was engaged in gold mining in several other districts in New Zealand, commencing one of the first dredges on the West Coast in the Ross district. In 1907 he accepted a position with a company operating dredges on the Gold Coast, West Africa, and remained there for two years. Later, he went to Victoria, and eventually returned to New Zealand, where he took up farming in the Kia Ora district, North Otago. About 1920 he gave up farming and took up casual work in Oamaru, retiring about 15 years ago. In 1889, Mr Anderson married Elizabeth Ann, eldest daughter of the late Thomas Carringham and Sara Ann Johnson, of Arrowtown. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Meadowbank Bowling Club, the Methodist Church, and the North Otago Early Settlers’ Association. He is survived bv his widow, two daughters— Mrs G. Smith (Alexandra) and Mrs W. Mulcahy (Oamaru)—and two sons —Thomas (Wellington) and Tod (Hanmer Springs). There are 12 grand children and 11 great-grandchildren.
