PIRATES WIN COMFORTABLY Playing attractive football, Pirates defeated Dunedin by 24 points to 3, after leading by 5 points to 3 at half time, in the early match at Carisbrook. In the first half L. Lawrence kicked a goal from a penalty for Dunedin, while S. A. Sutherland (first five-eighth) outdistanced the opposition from nearly halfway to score for Pirates from a fine opening by the centre, C. J. McDonald. Sutherland and McDonald were both outstanding in the second half. The Pirates forwards were dominating play from the scrums and line outs, ana, wi.h A. L. Mclndoe (half-back) opening up the game with judgment, the back line combined in many bright movements Tries were added by C. C. Foley (2), Sutherland, R. D. Darracott, and Mclndoe, and R. H. Bell and Mclndoe each converted one try. E. H. Dowland hooked well for Pirates, and D. R. Sapsford, R. D. Darracott, and A. D. Fraser played with dash in the pack. The Dunedin forwards battled with a will, but lacked the concerted effort and dash of the Pirates - pack in the loose. J. Riach was a good leader until he was injured in the second half, and F, Macpherson, J. Little, and D„ Lowe played solidly. B. Haig, whose Injury the previous week proved to be less serious than was at first thought, gave a workmanlike display behing the Dunedin pack, and sent out some well-directed passes. Lawrence and R, McCormack combined fairly effectively at five-eighths, McCormack making several penetrating runs. Mr J. Garthwaite was the referee.
