TAIERI SUPERIOR
CLOSELY-FOUGHT MATCH Taieri’s solidity was an effective counter to the dash and enterprise of Training College in the match at Bathgate Paix, and the Mosgiel team won by 8 points to 6. Although the closeness of the scores was sufficient to maintain the spectators enthusiasm, the frequency of errors detracted from any real merit the game possessed. A mark claimed by T. Campbell the students’ second five-eighth, from which he dropped a goal, was an unusual feature. , .. ... Taieri relied on its forwards, and these players did not let the team down. A. Houston and D. Wallace played solidly, E Vaughan showed ability in the loose piav and B. Wilkins was a shrewd leader. The backs were not so good, especially bv comparison with the student rearguard, who combined well in passing rushes. Little protection from the , f ast-moviiig Taieri forwards was afforded J. Averill, the College half-back, but he nevertheless contrived to send out long ana accurate masses Campbell also played well. Of the Training College forwards L ThorrrpKnn a tall rangy type, useful in the Une outs, and J. Mitchell gave intelligent dl G. la Mline and L. Blackie, both forwards, scored tries for Taieri, one of which L. Couper converted with a goo £.i^ l si c ' Training College, R. Harley scored a try and Campbell dropped a goal from a mark. The referee was Mr J. K. btewari.
