Gowns for Role of “Carmen” Created especially for Miss Janet Howe in the role of Carmen, and worn for the first, time last night, her frocks, vivid, alluring, essentiallv gipsy, are one of the delights of a delightful performance. Miss Howe makes her first appearance in a white cotton blouse over an extremely full skirt of deep vermilion woollen material, hand embroidered in black dots. A black Spanish shawl, embroidered in scarlet, and scarlet shoes, complete this ensemble, while her hair is caught back in a sleek bob. witn combs and a red rose. In her second entrance, the shawl is swathed and knotted dashingly around the hips. For the second act, Miss Howe chooses a heavy slipper satin in saffron yellow The full circular skirt, again finished with two frills, is latticed with black and edged with white ruching; and a white cotton blouse, with a tangerine satin corselet is worn. This time Miss'Howe has her hair swept high, and adorned with scarlet and yellow flowers She next appears in the smugglers’ den, hair flowing in gipsy fashion, with jaunty red boots, white blouse and a full, heavy grey skirt with insertions of red. With this is worn a dark brown bolero and a red serape, or blanket, is carried. Elaborate ear-rings are part of each ensemble. The dress for the final act is a glorious creation in white slipper satin, longwaisted, and having trills from hip io hem. A mass of -crimson roses holds in place her lovely mantilla of cream real Maltese lace, and she carries a large crimson fan.
