SILICA SANDS
DOMINION INVESTIGATION POSSIBILITY OF GLASSWORKS INDUSTRY P.A. WELLINGTON, May 27. If results of tests of sand samples from North Auckland, Canterbury, and Otago prove sufficiently promising, an overseas expert on glassmaking will visit New Zealand to investigate the establishment of a glassworks, it is learned in Wellington. Geologists and chemists of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who are making tests and examinations, have found that considerable quantities of silica sands are available. They differ widely in quality, however, and laboratory investigation of their suitability for special industrial purposes, such as glassmaking, will take a considerable time. The published result of a brief study of New Zealand sands by the Dominion Laboratory some years ago stated that few were suitable for superior glassmaking, as the majority of the samples tested had too high' an iron content, or lacked the correct degree of coarseness.
