STATE OF ISRAEL

SOUTH AFRICA GIVES RECOGNITION “ BLOW TO BRITISH POLICY ” N.Z.P.A. —Reuter.—Copyright LONDON, May 24. South Africa has decided to recognise the State of Israel. The Prime Minister, General Smuts, o telegraphed this decision to Mr Moshe Shertok, Israel’s Foreign Minister, says Reuter’s Pretoria correspondent. Political circles in London regard the South African decision as a severe blow to the British Governments Palestine policy. It is believed that South Africa did not definitely inform Britain in advance. General Smuts, in his message to Mr Shertok, said: “ South Africa accords de facto recognition to Israel. In view of the United Nations resolution of November 29 last, which was based on

partition, this recognition is riot in respect of any particular boundaries. The Union Government will be prepared to accord similar recognition to any Arab area in Palestine, either as a separate State or as incorporated into neighbouring Arab States. The Union Government expresses its good wishes to Israel at the fulfilment of the policy of a Jewish national home in Palestine, and as a contribution to historic justice and world peace.’’
