THREAT PASSES

ANXIETY AT GISBORNE P.A. GISBORNE,' May 23. The Gisborne flats escaped the threat of a second inundation in a week on Saturday, when, after nearly an inch and a-half of rain in eight hours, the Waipaoa River rose to 13$ft, about 4Jft below danger point. The Catchment Board, at 3 p.m., warned farmers to move stock, and told settlers to prepare for possible evacuation. An hour later, however, the downpour ceased, and by 9.30 p.m. the crisis had passed. The -north road, which was blocked at the river bridge, was clear this morning, and the railway was operating normally.
