LORD WOOLTON DEFENDS CONSERVATIVES

N.Z.P.A. Special CorrespondentCopyright LONDON, May 20. A reply to Mr Attlee’s comment at Scarborough that Lord Woolton, an “ expert salesman,” had no policy for the Conservatives in stock—” he has only got stinking fish ” —has been made by Lord Woolton. He stated: “I assure Mr Attlee that there is nothing in the Conservative Party programme that could be called stinking Ssh. Mr Attlee is a man for whom I have the highest personal respect, and I am sorry he should indulge in , such undignified language. But I am itill more sorry the Prime Minister ihould make statements that are not true. “It is not true that we have no policy. During the past mopth, Mr Churchill and I have gone to a little trouble making clear )vhat our policy is. The first point of our policy is surely abundantly clear. It is to get rid of Mr Attlee, and to change the Government of this country. Mr Attlee surely knows the difference between policy and programme. If he says we have not got a programme, he would be. right about that. We have no intention of producing a programme until we know what the conditions are. just before the election.”
