United Nations Mediator Named

Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, May 20. Count Folke Bernadotte, of Sweden, was chosen to-night as the United Nations mediator for Palestine. Count Bernadotte is vice-president of the Swedish Red Cross, and he was selected by the Big Five with his consent. The appointment was unanimous. His salary will be 26,000 dollars a year, excluding expenses.

The mediator’s duties, as established by the General Assembly, will be to act in a mediatory capacity for

the whole of Palestine, and to carry out whatever administrative functions are entrusted to him by both sides. It will be left to Count Bernadotte and Mr Trygve Lie to decide between themselves whether the Count shall go straight to Palestine or come to Lake Success first.
