LABOUR’S ACHIEVEMENTS

MR ATTLEE PROUD OF RECORD LONDON, May 19. The Prime Minister, Mr Attlee, addressing the Labour Party’s conference at Scarborough, said he was proud of the achievements of the party and of the Government in the face of great difficulties.

“We have had to exclude some members,” he said, “but I would like to stress the great loyalty of the vast majority of the party. I do not think therff is really much need for members who want to make their weight felt to go outside, issue manifestoes, or form their little groups.” Attacking the Opposition policy. Mr Attlee said'one feature of Parliament was the “ incoherence of the Opposition under the somewhat intermittent leadership of Mr Churchill.” He added that the Opposition constantly attempted to make capital out of all the difficulties, grievances, and hardships which existed in present conditions. “The Opposition attribute them all to the Labour Government,” Mr Attlee said. “Lord Wootton has no policy in stock, he has only got stinking fish.” Mr James Griffiths, Britain’s Minister of National Insurance, was elected by the conference as chairman of the National Executive of the Labour Party for the ensuing year.
