AMERICAN DEMAND

RECOGNITION OF ISRAEL BY BRITAIN LABOUR LEADER’S ATTACK Rec. 11 p.m. NEW YORK, May 20. Mr William Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, as- ' sailed the British Labour Government to-day for its policy on the new State of Israel. Mr Green, speaking officially for the 8,000,000 members of his organisation, said: “We have believed that when a Tory Government was replaced by a Government of the working people, we could count on that Government to stand up, but when we examine its record we discover that it has failed to measure up to our expectations. We call on the Labour Government of Britain now to act as it preaches—to recognise, protect and help establish Israel.” A British Foreign Office spokesman said in London that no reply would be sent to Mr Shertok’s appeal for British recognition of Israel. Reuter’s diplomatic correspondent says a reply to Mr Shertok would imply de facto recognition that Mr Shertok was Foreign Minister. In Tel-Aviv, Israel’s Foreign' Minister, Mr Moshe Shertok, said that Israel’s citizens would be called Israelis, not Israelites. He added: ' “ Israelites was the name in Bible times of this modern nation.”

The Jewish Cabinet approved a series of orders nullifying former British laws ii»* Palestine and transferring authority to the Jewish Provisional Government »
