NEW HIGHWAY
NO IMMEDIATE MAJOR WORK MISCONCEPTION EXPLAINED PA. BLENHEIM, May 21. The intention was not immediately to launch into the construction of the through highway from Auckland to Wellington, said Mr D. H. Cockburn, representing Otago counties when replying to a question regarding the recently announced autobahn at the quarterly meeting of the South Island Local Bodies’ Association this morning. The chairman, Mr E. H. Andrews, Mayor of Christchurch, said there was an idea abroad as a result of the published statements that a full new highway through the North Island was going to Be completely built. , , , Mr Cockburn said the boards officers had been laying down a prospectus by which sufficient outlet could be given to main arterial routes which at present were heavily congested. The announcement did not necessarily mean that a great amount of work would be done in the near future.
“ The board does not approve of the construction of a full new highway at present, but only work in sections,” Mr Cockburn said. The system adopted had been to outline a scheme of long-sighted policy which would be on the right lines inasmuch as the work done would not eventually have to be scrapped.
