DISPUTES THREATENED

AUSTRALIAN DOCTORS AND HOSPITAL BOARDS FREE MEDICINE SCHEME Rec. 10 p.m. SYDNEY, May 20. The medical superintendent of one of the largest hospitals in Sydney forecasts that opposition by the British Medical Association to the Commonwealth free medicine scheme due to commence on June 1 promises to promote bitter conflict in every hospital in Australia. Disputes are threatened when hospital boards, seeking to reduce costs, order medical staffs to prescribe for free medicines on Government forms. The boards, consisting of laymen not bound by the association, will probably insist that the medical staffs make use of the scheme to halve hospital drug accounts and substantially reduce dispensary costs. The doctors are adamant in their refusal to co-operate with the scheme.
