“FANTASTIC INCOMES”

NEW ZEALAND DOCTORS LORD BEVERIDGE’S VIEW CANBERRA. May 20. “In New Zealand fantastically high incomes are being paid to some doctors operating under the free medical scheme,” said Lord Beveridge in an address to the Economic Society. “Frankly, New Zealand is in somewhat of a mess in this matter, and if I had anything to do with the Australian legislation to be brought down I would not touch it until I had received the report of the New Zealand investigating committee, which is to be made public.” He added that in the New Zealand scheme, uniike that of Britain, doctors were paid 7s 6d a visit rather than a per capita fee. As a result some doctors were continually treating patients, and many doctors were unwittingly forced into the position of doing shoddy work for many, instead of good work for a limited number. Payments under the British social sei'vices scheme were much more Communistic than those in Russia and America, in that payments were related to what was needed by the necessaries of life, and were not related to previous income.
