WORTHWHILE TRIP
p.A WELLINGTON, May 20. Although Bos Murphy’s tenure of the British Empire middle-weight boxing title came to a sudden end at the hands of Dick Turpin at Coventry on Tuesday night, the fight was not without its compensations for the New Zealander. Mr P. J. Galvin, who formerly managed’ Murphy in New Zealand, said to-day that Murphy had a guarantee of £2OOO to defend his title, with an alternative of 20 per cent’, of the gate. “A crowd of 30,000 is quite big, remarked Mr Galvin, “ and with ringside seats at a ‘ fiver ’ each, the takings would be considerable. Bos expected to get £4OOO if the attendance was at all reasonable, and, as things turned out, I should say he would get at least £4OOO. and probably the best part of £sooo.’’ Mr Galvin said he had had no recent advice as to Murphy’s intentions, but he expected Murphy would wait and see the Olympic Games, and would then catch the first boat home. Murphy’s trip had been well worthwhile and he would have a nice nestegg on which to retire from the ring.
