JBOS MURPHY'S CAREER IN BRITAIN BOXING WRITERS’ COMMENT N.Z.P.A. Special Correspondent LONDON, May 19. The Daily Herald’s boxing writer, James Butler, commenting upon Bos Murphv’s defeat by Dick Turpin, says it means that Murphy’s career in Britain has closed after winning and losing a title in four months. “ Murphy's slight neck is unable to withstand heavy punches, and Turpin evidently knew this,” says Mr Butler. The Daily Mail’s boxing writer, Geoffrey Simpson, says Turpin won the fight by quickly seizing his openings rather than by any marked boxing superiority. On the contrary Murphy looked the more stylish and confident boxer during the first two minutes of the fight, and was dictating the course of events with his long and rapid left. The two right-handed punches with which Turpin won the fight, however, were extremely damaging, and Murphy could have no complaints about his defeat. The New Zealander’s habit of carrying his right hand as a passenger handicapped him once again. Peter Campling, writing in the News Chronicle, predicts that Turpin will put British boxing back on the map, and that he will have no difficulty in defeating Vince Hawkins for the British middle-weight title when the pair meet on June 28 at Birmingham.
