CIVIL CONTEMPT OF COURT

WASHINGTON, May 18. Federal Judge Alan Goldsborough at the Government’s request to-day set aside the civil contempt of court conviction imposed on Mr John L. Lewis and the United Mineworkers on April 21 as the result of the recent walkout over miners’ pensions. The Government’s reason for requesting the withdrawal was that the mines are operating again. The Government’s action has no effect on tne fines of 1,420,000 dollars imposed on the union and 20,000 dollars on Lewis for criminal contempt in refusing to halt the walk-out “forthwith. Lewis and the union arc appealing against the fines.
