REASONS SOUGHT

SMALL IMPORTATION OF BRITISH FILMS

p,A, WELLINGTON, May 19. Figures submitted to-day to the Parliamentary Committee which is inquiring into the motion; picture industry showed that 17 British films and 280 foreign films had been passed by the censor last’ year for screening in New Zealand. In the previous year 31 British films and 309 foreign films were approved by the censor. Reasons for the small percentage of British films were sought by the Minister of Industries and Commerce, Mr Nordmeyer, during the cross-examina-tion of Mr R. Girling-Butcher. late chief inspector of films. Mr GirlingButcher replied that he understood it was due to the holding up of certain releases from England, which were now coming to hand. The Minister: What held these up? Mr Girling-Butcher said that he was unable to say. The Minister: Was this hold-up apparent before the war? Mr Girling-Butcher, who replied in the negative, said that the figures then bore a more reasonable proportion of British .films. He added that experience in recent years showed that British films were more successful than American films. The figures given related to feature films. The actual position was probably better than the figures indicated, for British films showed for longer periods and in more centres than American films.
