PICTURES AND MUSIC

ESSENTIAL TO EDUCATION

P.A. AUCKLAND, May 18. “Pictures and music are now considered as necessary a part of educational environment as books —indeed, as alternative ways by which a man expresses his thoughts and feelings,” stated a report presented to the. Auckland University College Council by the college librarian, Mr F. A. Sandall. He was reporting favourably on a request that gramophone records and scores should be more extensively available to students outside the department of music. Professor • Hollinrake, dean of the faculty of music, did not favour lending to outside students, because the supplies were “ totally inadequate and undeveloped,” and there were more urgent problems claiming attention. The council, on the recommendation of the Education Committee, .resolved against complying with the request.
