STONE MASONRY

DIFFICULTIES' OF TRADE

Labour difficulties and the virtual absence of apprentices in the trade were discussed at the annual conference of the New Zealand Monumental Masons’ Association in Dunedin yesterday. It was pointed out that after housing needs had been met, projected building programmes would involve considerable business for stone masons, but it would require the services of many more men than the trade had now. The conference discussed methods for effecting a general improvement in cemetery work. The “ ginger bread ” constructions were being dropped, it was stated, in favour of work of a more durable nature. Delegates decided unanimously to combat the tendency on the part of some subcontractors who were taking advantage of the labour difficulties by attempting to enforce higher prices for piecework.
