NEW JUDGE

APPOINTMENT TO SUPREME COURT

P.A. AUCKLAND, May 19. The appointment of Mr J. Stanton. Auckland city solicitor, as a judge of the Supreme Court was announced today by the Minister of Justice, Mr Mason. Born in Auckland in 1884, Mr Stanton has lived in the city all his life and has been prominent for many years in his profession and in several other spheres. He was educated at Auckland Grammar School and Auckland University College, and entered the office of the late Mr Thomas Cotter, K.C., who was then city solicitor. Graduating as ’bachelor of laws in 1907, Mr Stanton was admitted to practice as a barrister and solicitor in the same year. Later he became Mr Cotter's chief clerk and was taken into partnership shortly before Mr, Cotter's death in 1913. In 1914 Mr Stanton was appointed city solicitor, and has been closely associated with the legal affairs of the city since then. Early in his career Mr Stanton' had a large general court practice, but because of pressure of work as city soliaitor he withdrew from that class of work. Apart from cases involving municipal law, Mr Stanton has taken a leading part in educational effairs in Auckland and has been chairman of the Auckland Grammar School’s Board for some years. He has also been chairman of the board of governors of Wesley College and a member of the hoard of governors of King's School.
