JOHN GAY’S CHANCES

AN IMPROVED JUMPER

special to the Daily Times CHRISTCHURCH, May 19. John Gay, winner of two hurdle races at Ashburton, will have his next start in the hurdle races at the Dunedin Jockey Club’s winter meeting. He was schooled over four hurdles at Riccarton this morning, making a bold showing at a solid pace, John Gay has improved in his jumping, but it is problematical how he will fare at Wingatui should the track bG Roman y ’son, one of the veteran Riccarton steeplechasers, and also a likely visitor to Wingatui, where he has previously raced well over country, was tiring at the end of his run over eight of the trial steeplechase fences though he lumped cleanly throughout. . , Precipitate led Royal Robe throughout their run over f°ur hurdles, both jumping particularly well. Precipitate is a hard horse to follow and Royal Robe, who is to race on the flat in the South Canterbury Handicap on Saturday, did particularly well to hold his ground. Rebel Night was also sent over four hurdles, but was unimpressive, jumping slowly.
