MESTIZA FANCIED AGAIN

South Canterbury Handicap

PRIZE RING LIKELY OUTSIDER

The inclusion of a number of fresh horses, among them Foxchase, Prize Ring, Batal, Royal Robe, and Clyde Bridge, in the South Canterbury Handicap on Saturday will add to the interest in the race. Mestiza won the Elloughton Handicap so impressively last Saturday that with 7.13, or 131 b more than she carried last Saturday, the Wild Chase mare looks the pick of the field. Grill, topweight with 9.5, has 41b more than he carried last Saturday and if he can be kept closer up to the leaders in the early stages than was the case last Saturday he will be a hard horse to beat. He can pull out a fine finishing run. Foxchase’s most recent race was over hurdles at Invercargill. He looks well but may be all the better of a race. The distance, however, will be no trouble to him. Falconbridge has 41b more than he carried into second place last Saturday. He has been racing generously and must be placed among the possibilities. Prize Ring was not started last Saturday but there is nothing wrong wifli him and with 7.8 he looks the most likely to trouble the best-backed runners. Of the balance of the field Knight Crusader, who finished fourth in the Elloughton Handicap, will have a following, but the placed horses last Saturday—Mestiza, Falconbridge, and Grill, are likely to be in most favour, with Prize Ring regarded as the most, likely outsider.
