WYRE LIGHTHOUSE DESTROYED BY FIRE

Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, May 17. The Fleetwood- lifeboat rescued three keepers from the blazing Wyre lighthouse on a sandbank three miles off Fleetwood. Half the lifeboat’s crew dashed up the 100-foot high iron ladder on the outside of the lighthouse to help the keepers extinguish the fire. A strong easterly breeze, however, fanned the flames beyond control and the lighthouse, which was built mainly of wood, was left a burning mass. The keepers said they did not know what caused the fire.
