EVENING DELIVERIES
CHRISTCHURCH MILK ROUNDSMEN EFFECT OF POWER CUTS P.A. CHRISTCHURCH. May 14. Where circumstances warrant, the Christchurch Metropolitan Milk Board will authorise milkmen to make deliveries in the evening while the power restrictions continue. The street lights are switched off at 11 p.m. Three vendors waited on the board to-day to seek this concession. They said that in the early morning they had difficulty in making deliveries in the dark and that some roundsmen had been injured. They, proposed to deliver the same morning’s bottled milk and raw milk from the evening’s milking. Deliveries would be finished about midnight and it was not expected that the freshness of the milk would be affected.
Mr R. G. Brown, a member of the board, said the vendors’ request seemed reasonable. There would, however, be some difficulty in arranging an inspection both day and night.' Mr J. A. Blacklock, medical officer of health, said there would also be the difficulty of analysing samples at night. The board agreed that its officers should approve evening deliveries on the merits of individual applications. It was agreed to review the effects of evening deliveries from month to month.
