EXTENSION WANTED
SCHOOL MEDICAL SERVICE PROVISION FOR SECONDARY CLASSES The mental and moral upset caused by the holding of a medical examination immediately before an important examination such as School Certificate was referred to on the final day of the annual conference of the New Zealand Secondary Schools’ Association yesterday Mr R. Fraser said that all Dunedin candidates had to undergo such an ordeal prior to the 1947 School Certificate examination and that some had been upset about the condition of their health without due cause. A remit proposing that the Government be asked to extend the school medical service to cover secondary schools was carried without dissent. Other remits passed recommended that up to 10 post-primary teachers a year should be selected for study abroad and that the Government should show more generosity in the provision of equipment and amenities for schools. When the conference ended yesterday afternoon the retiring president, Mr A. N. B. McAloon (Wellington College) expressed appreciation of the facilities made available at the Girls’ High School, where the conference was held, and thanked all those connected with the organisation of the gathering The new president, Mr O. J. Begg, of Palmerston North Boys’ High School, expressed appreciation of the splendid way in which Mr McAloon, who was the first assistant master chosen as president of the association, had performed his duties.
