MR ROBERT SUTHERLAND Mr Robert Sutherland, of Clarendon street, Dunedin, whose death occurred recently after a short illness, was the son of Donald Sutherland, of Crofts Clythwick, Caithness, and was born in 1876. After serving his apprenticeship to the bakery trade with the late Mr John Sutherland he came to New Zealand arriving in Dunedin on July 6,1909. He first went to Waipori Falls, where he undertook labouring work, and later became associated with the power house works under the late Mr E. E. Stark, who was then engineer: After seven years at Waipori, he was transferred to Dunedin as a linesman with the Electricity Department, and he ultimately advanced to the position of reticulation foreman attached to the overhead department, which he held for a long timer

111-health . necessitated Mr Sutherland’s retirement, but during his long association with the Electricity Department he gained the esteem of all with whom he came in contact. His desire to assist others is shown by the fact that he was a founder of the Sick Benefit Society, the Social Club, the Card Club, the Cricket Club ana other organisations for the welfare of the men of the Electricity Department. He was also a member of the Dunedin Bowling Club. Mr Sutherland is survived by his wife, three sons—Ben., Bert (Temuka), and Jesse (Redan)—and two daughters, Mrs Randle (Margret) and Mrs Berryman (Lena). Another son, Don. died some years ago.
