WATER SUPPLY
BORE AT WINGATUI WORK PROCEEDING Work on the provision of a water supply for the city from underground sources at Wingatui is'proceeding. A report by the city engineer, Mr S. G. Scoular, to the City Council’s Water Committee, states that a heavy drilling machine is now on the site of the bore at Wingatui. The 24inch outside pipes have also been delivered and a start has been made on the preliminary work of driving them. These pipes will form a protection around the main bore. It is expected that at an early date the work will begin of making the 18-inch slotted pipe for the main artesian bore. The Water Committee contemplates gravelling part of the Abbotsford road from the Wingatui road to the Fernhill coal mine road, in order to facilitate the cartage of the 30-inch and 24-inch steel concrete-lined pipes at present on order for piping the Silverstream race, The road is in the Taieri County and the county council will supply the gravel from its pit free of charge. Pump at Powder Creek The report of the Water Committee states that a two-stage centrifugal electric pump will be installed at Powder Creek, and a new rising main will be provided to connect the pump to the race. The rising main, approximately 750 feet long, will be laid in 9-inch steel concrete-lined pipes from stock. The installation of this additional plant will enable more water to be pumped into the race under certain hydraulic conditions and wfil also act as a stand-by to the present pump in the event of its breakdown. The estimated cost of gravelling part of the Abbotsford road is £720 and the estimated cost of the work at Powder creek, excluding the electrical installation, is £I4OO. The cost of the pump is £450. Scouring of City Mains “ Now that the stored water position is satisfactory, a start will be made with the full-bore scouring of the whole of the city trunk mains and reticulation system,” states the report. “ This has been the procedure for some years and reduces the danger of dirty water. In order to reduce the strain of long hours on employees and to perform the work economically, it is proposed to do the scouring outside the city industrial area during normal hours, and ample notice will be given to householders in each., district affected. Scouring in the industrial area will take place during week-ends to avoid interference with industry.”
