NEW EQUIPMENT

CONICAL HILLS FORESTS HUGE TRUCK FOR LOGGING As part of its development scheme of the Conical Hill forests the State Forestry Service has purchased some new equipment, notable among which is a 10-ton truck acquired from the War Assets Realisation -Board. This huge vehicle reached Dunedin from Wellington in the coastal vessel Waimarino and will be sent south by- rail this week. A Mack model, the truck is similar to those which wdn a reputation among servicemen in the recent war of never becoming bogged in the desert. Because of its size and the damaging effect it would probably have on the roads in the district, the truck will mostly likely be operated only in the forests. Equipped with a front-wheel drive and a winch installed at the rear of the cab, it is eminently suitable for logging purposes. According to its speedometer it has travelled less than 1000 miles, and although it bears traces of its long sojourn in a military motor vehicle park, it is in remarkably good mechanical order, only a few adjustments being necessary before it can begin service.
