FROM THE FILES OF THE ©tago '©atl? ©lines DUNEDIN, APRIL 19, 1863 The final figures for the election of a Superintendent for the Province of Otago show that Mr J: Hyde Harris was elected with a total of 554 votes against 432 polled by Major Richardson, Mr Harris’s majority being 122. “An old impostor named Henry McTierney, who has for some time been victimising hotelkeepers in Dunedin board and lodging by representing himself to be a lucky miner, was yesterday brought up at the Police Court by Detective Tuckwell, and sentenced under the Vagrant Act to one month’s imprisonment with hard labour.” “ The following are the quantities of gold brought by this week’s escort:— Wakatipu, 10,3470 z sdwt; Dunstan, 28210 z 15dwt; Tuapeka, 24160 z; Waitahuna, 4450 z; Woolshed, 3500 z; —total, 16,3800 z. Of the Wakatipu gold, 60230 z lOdwt was from Queenstown, and 43230 z 15dwt from the Arrow township. The receipts from Tuapeka and Waitahuna probably represent nearly three weeks’ work, as no gold was forwarded from either place for the previous two weeks. “ George street is going ahead rapidly just now, no doubt owing to the stimulus given by the Town Board’s acceptance of the contract for its permanent formation, according to a plan prepared by the city engineer, and the general belief that the. Princes street cutting will probably be finished before the winter really sets in. There are six buildings in progress at present between the Octagon and the Oddfellows’Hall, two being well advanced and of respectable size, and three having been commenced yesterday. Further on two or three erections are being proceeded with, a large store in connection with a builder’s yard is all but completed, and the finishing touches are being given to an addition to the Robert Burns Hotel, which has more than doubled its accommodation capacity.” “ Gentlemen who have been ‘ well known to the police’ in Victoria and New South Wales may be assured that Otago is not a safe place of residence for them. The General Government have disallowed the Criminals’ Ordinance of the Provincial Council, but the police authorities have got together a body of officers who, in addition to great cuteness, are possessed of uncommonly good memories for the faces and histories of those who have, been troublesome ‘ on the other side.’ ”
