TRENTHAM TRIALS
SIGNAL OFFICER’S SMART EFFORT MARYBURN SPRINTS WELL Special to the Daily Times WELLINGTON, Mar. 12. Signal Officer, favourite for the Autumn Handicap to-morrow, completed his preparation to-day by running an attractive half-mile on the outside of ihe course proper at Trentham. The going was hard and fast. Partnered by Gunther, Signal Officer completed the distance in 50 3-ssec, taking 37 3-ssec for the final three furlongs. Signal Officer was travelling easily alongside his companion at the end of the trial and could have done better. Gunther was feeling the hard going. Maryburn gained friends for his engagement in the Silverstream Haca Handicap when he left five furlongs behind in lmin 3 4-ssec, the last four taking 50 2-ssec, and the final three 30 4-ssec. Maryburn is very fit and galloped effortlessly throughout. F. D. Jones’s two juveniles, Musselman and Magical, could have improved on their 51 3-ssec for half a mile. They came home from the three furlongs in 38 3-ssec. Both are well forward for engagements at the meeting. The Pagan was not extended to beat Silverstream by a length over three furlongs run in 37sec. The Pagan has disappointed in his latest outings but he has previously won at Trentham and is in the right order to make an improved showing in the Railway Handicap. Travelling smoothly, Selas left the last halfmile of six furlongs behind in 52sec, the final three furlongs requiring 38 3-ssec. Irish Note showed that he still retained his brilliance when he, completed three furlongs in 36 4-ssec. Coral Arc was not after time when running half a mile in 53sec, the final three furlongs taking 38sec. He is carrying a little surplus condition but should be capable of a forward showing in the Silverstream Handicap Revolte, who is in solid condition, ran three furlongs in 38 l-ssec, and ther. completed a round on the plough at half-pace. He is likely to be. one of the favourites for the Thompson Handicap. The two-year-old, Air Belle, could have improved on the 51sec it took her to run half a mile. She completed the final three furlongs in 37sec and was under a good hold passing the post. Citril ran half a mile but was not timed. Although she has not raced since the Wellington' summer meeting she is in good order to contest the Railway Handicap.
