NELSON PEARS
OVER-RIPE FRUIT CONSIGNED APPLE MARKET STEADIER Good supplies of Bon Chretien pears have reached the Dunedin marts from Nelson, but several lines received have been in an over-ripe condition. Large quantities of pears in bad order reached Dunedin from the same source last year and merchants had hoped that steps would have been taken to prevent a recurrence. A small shipment of bananas is expected to arrive by the Waipahi towards the end of this week. Sales of apples, which are in good supply, have steadied down, and only choice grades of tomatoes are selling, with heavy consignments reaching the market. There is little likelihood of an improvement in the prevailing low prices. Most lines of stcne fruit are being rationed to retailers. Vegetables are not plentiful, and better prices are ruling. French and runner beans, however, arc in very heavy supply, and in common with • marrows, are selling at low prices. An arnple supply of pumpkins is coming forward, mainly from the North Island.
