MARINERS WARNED

AREA OF DISTURBED WATER FAREWELL SPIT VICINITY PA WELLINGTON, Feb. 10. Following a report yesterday afternoon by the lighthouse keeper at Farewell Spit of an area of disturbed water, with breaking waves, about two miles north-east of the light tower, the Marine Department has warned mariners to avoid the locality and has sent the lighthouse tender Matai to investigate and take soundings. The lighthouse keeper, Mr H. B. Jamieson, said to-day that the disturbance might be caused by shifting sand and might have had some connection with several minor earthquakes felt at the lighthouse during recent weeks.
