GRAVE IMPLICATIONS

MR GANDHI’S LATEST FAST PEACE OF INDIA AT STAKE CALCUTTA, Sept. 3. Almost the entire Indian press has stressed the grave implications of the fast which Mr Gandhi commenced yesterday in an attempt to obtain communal peace in* Calcutta, reports Reuter’s Bombay correspondent. The Times of India said Gandhi’s life is a hostage to Calcutta. More than his life—the peace of India—is at stake. The British-owned Statesman said that, although it had never concurred in the ethics of fasting as a political instrument, it wished Gandhi unqualified success. Never in a long career has Gandhi fasted in a worthier cause. Gandhi’s physician, Dr Dinshaw Mehta, stated that Gandhi passed a relatively restful night without any disturbing clinical symptoms, but his condition was “ distinctly lower than usual ” after 34 hours of fast.
