POLES FOR TROLLEY BUSES
VARIOUS TENDERS ACCEPTED BY COUNCIL The tender of J. J. Niven and Co Ltd., for a chase-side J cubic yard loading shovel, for the gas department, was accepted by the City Council last night. The price is £1397 and the shovel was manufactured in the United Kingdom. Other tenders accepted included the following for poles required for the initial trolley-bus installation:—Hume Pipe Company, Ltd., 110 “ Stobie ” type poles for the Crawford street section, £2202; the Timber, Coal and Box Agency, Christchurch, 232 poles, £4196 10s; A. J. Allen, Ltd., 1010 poles, £7728; Keith Ramsay, Ltd., 48 poles, £507. It was explained that the prices for the wooden poles exceeded the original estimate, but this aspect had been considered when the whole question of increased prices was submitted to the previous meeting of the council. The council also accepted the tender of Napier Motors, Ltd., for two 10 h.p. Ford Prefect cars for the gas department. These cars were manufactured in England. The total cost will be £1064, less a trade-in allowance of £355 on the department’s two old vehicles, a net cost of £709.
