“SOAP BOX DERBY”

CAMPAIGN TO PROVIDE A SCHOLARSHIP CONTEST IN DECEMBER An organisation in Wellington ib circulating details of a national “Soap Box Derby”—a trolley race for boys —and is inviting business firms to sponsor a boy competitor at a fee of £7 10s. The number of entrants is restricted to between 150 and 200 in each of the main centres. The dates fixed for the events are as follows: Auckland, November 22; Christchurch, November 29; Dunedin, December 6; Wellington, December 13. Each main centre will send a centre winner to compete for the grand national prize of £250 at Wellington. While the smaller prizes for the centre preliminaries will be in cash, the major prize will be in the form of an annual scholarship, subsidised each year by £SO until the total sum available to a boy contemplating college or university attendance reaches £SOO. It is stated that men of high standing in various professions will be counsellors to boys planning their future professions. The event is open to boys between the ages of 10 and 14, and competitors will be required to provide their own vehicles, which must not cost more than £1 or have air-inflated rubber tyres. The size of the trolley is limited and the regulations are so 'drafted as to ensure that it will be under proper control.
