ROAD SAFETY

EDUCATIONAL CAMPAIGN BOOKLETS FOR CHILDREN Because of their concern at the rapid increase in the number of road accidents involving injury or death, the Junior Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand, at their last annual conven tion, decided to conduct in 1947 a campaign for greater safety on the roads The campaign, which will commence on Monday next, will be undertaken by 20 junior chambers throughout the Dominion, utilising the full man-powe: membership of the organisation—nearly 3000 young men. The campaign will end on Saturday, Augus 1 30. In essence, the campaign is one ot concentrated publicity, the theme of which may be explained from the slogan “ Have a Care—Danger’s There! ” which will be displayed on posters and other publicity material. Perhaps the most novel feature of the campaign will be the distribution to school children between the ages of 5 and 12 years of a humorously-written and depicted booklet, the hero of which is “ Stanley the Safety Pup." A special friend of children, “ Stanley ’’ has the remarkable capacity of changing the colour of his eyes from red when danger lurks to green when all is clear. Through the adventures of Stanley ” in conflict with the danger imp, who is his special enemy, “ Stanley the Safety Pup” conveys in an unsuspecting manner the essentials oi road care—cross only when the road is clear, use only authorised crossings in streets where they are provided, and always obey the traffic signals. No fewer than 100,000 of these booklets will be distributed to school children throughout the Dominion. The expenses of the road safety campaign, running into several hundreds of pounds, have been met bysubscriptions from individuals, organisations, and business Arms who have responded to the junior chambers’ appeal for assistance in this campaign to make the roads safer for all users.
