ENSLAVEMENT SCHEIE

AMERICAN AID TO GREECE CHARGE BY MR GROMYKO Rec. 9 p.m. NEW YORK, Aug. 14. Resuming the discussion on the Balkans dispute in the Security Council to-day, Mr Gromyko alleged that former Axis collaborators were now holding prominent positions in the Greek Government. He accused the United States of the “ crudest interference ” in Greek domestic affairs. He said that American aid was being given to Greece under the guise of upholding democracy against totalitarianism. Actually, “ foreign benefactors are tightening the noose on the neck of the Greek people to enslave them politically and economically, and this foreign interference from the west is fanning the flames in South-Eastern Europe,” he said. Mr Gromyko declared that the United States was .not seriously attempting to settle the Greek question, but was indulging in the political ‘game of “warming the hana of those who would like to see the collapse of United Nations co-operation.” Mr Gromyko said the Australian resolution was wholly unacceptable to Russia and declared that it was worse than the first American resolution. Russia would oppose both the American and Australian proposals. The debate was adjourned. The Australian resolution proposed that the Security Council label the Balkan situation a threat to peace, call on the four Balkan Governments to cease acts of provocation, send United Nations observers to the scene, and refrain from blaming any of the Balkan Governments.
