OPEN HEARINGS

DIVORCE COURT PROCEEDINGS ADVOCATED BY AUSTRALIAN JUDGE Rec. 8 p.m. SYDNEY, Aug. 14. The open hearing of divorce cases was supported by Mr Justice Bonney in the Newcastle Divorce Court. “It snould always be remembered," he said, “ that. one of the most precious aspects of law and procedure which this country inherited is that all cases are held in public. Every citizen has the right to be present to see how justice is being administered. > “Not only is it highly desirable that the great inheritance of public justice be adhered to.” he said, “but also in divorce matters it may be useful to those who are perhaps minded to marry a man. who on the evidence before the court, appears to be a wifebasher and thev may at least be put on their guard.” Advice from Hobart is that the Tasmanian Government intends to introduce a Bill next month to prohibit newspapers from publishing reports of court proceedings “calculated 1o injure public morals.” The prohibition will chiefly apply to medical evidence considered indecent and detailed reports of divorce proceedings.
