EUROPEAN TRADE
CLOSER RELATIONS SOUGHT MEMBER NATIONS OF PARIS CONFERENCE Rec. 9 p.m. LONDON, Aug. 14.' Mr Ernest Bevin and other Ministers have, been closely examining a French proposal for a Customs union among member nations of the Paris Economic Conference, says the diplomatic correspondent of The Times. It is learned that the British Ministers are willing to allow the conference’s study groups to go into the whole question without commitment. French experts, including M. Alphand, have been strongly pressing the proposal on the grounds that it is the best measure to promote the exchange of goods within Europe, and would be an indication to the United States that the European States are making evefy effort to help themselves. The correspondent said that the British Government was bound to treat the proposal cautiously because although European trade amounts to one-third or a-quarter of Britain’s total trade, there was a much larger volume of trade outside Europe to be considered, particularly the maintenance and development of the dominions’ trade.
