RUGBY NOTES

THE HARLEQUINS MATCH It was unfortunate that the date of the Hartequins-North Otago game clashed with a Ranfurly Shield match at Dunedin. The attraction of shield Rugby was reflected in the attendance at the Show Grounds, but the game was one of the best seen on the Oval this year. Tlie top names of the Harlequins’ team made the team appear formidable on paper, and the rapidity with which the visitors swung into action on the field, registering a converted try within four minutes of the commencement of play, dispelled any doubts as to the capabilities of the players. The All Black members of the team were the centre of attraction and did not disappoint the spectators. Mitchell’s opening try, and Goddard’s try in the second spell, were both gained from typical All Black movements, Goddard’s effort being particularly meritorious. Though the North Otago side was without the services of Fountain. Arscott, Boyd Robertson, Mosley and Golder, they made a good showing against a strong side. The forwards did not suffer in comparison with their opponents, except in the set scrums, and in line-outs and loose work held their own. Diver, behind the scrum, sent out a few erratic passes, but created a very good impression, and it is not surprising that he has been selected for the Town A team. The rest of the backs played sound football and Ruddenklau’s try was probably the best, and was certainly the most spectacular, effort of the day. Halvorsen’s kicking made the difference in the score of 19—11 in North Qtago’s favour. Town v. country ' The return Town v. Country matches will be played at Kurow to-morrow. This annual attraction is well received in the country, and it is expected that there will be a big attendance at to-morrow’s games. Arrangements for the entertainment of the teams have been left to the Waitaki Sub-union. Draw for To-morrow Seniors. —Town B v. Counry B, at Kurow, 1.30 p.m. (Rev. G. D. Falloon): Town A v.
