Jottings Fairyhouse gave a fine display of fast and clean jumping in the Enfield Steeples and looked capable of winning in better company. Niccola Del Area, the winner of the Italian Derby, and half-brother to Nearco, has been purchased by an English owner. From Greymouth YOung John, who was one of the early leaders in the Avonhead Handicap, is, a five-year-old by Leighon from Mataa, and is trained at Greymouth by C. J. Walsh. Should Improve Gold Medallion did not appear to be favoured in the early stages of the Cashmere Plate, but he was showing up in the run home to finish sixth. He may do better before the meeting is over. Town Survey The only previous winner of the Grand National Hurdles weighted for this season’s event is Town Survey, who in 1943 won the treble of the Great Northern Hurdles, the Wellington Winter Hurdles and the Grand National Hurdles. Sister to Derene Citril, a sister to Derene, will probably be given a race on one of the remaining days of the Grand National meeting. She has had three races and at her most recent start she won the Lagmhor Stakes easily at Ashburton in May. In Good Form John o’ London was prominent throughout the running of the Paparua Handicap, and finished fourth. The Greymouth trainer, C. J. Walsh, ’has the SolicitorGeneral gelding in good form and may win a race with him before long. National Winners When Record Reign won the Grand National Hurdles he carried 12.12. That was in 1900. Other substantial weights carried by winners were Liberator (12.6, 1894). Paisano (12.1, 1910), Continuance (11.11. 1911), Thylam (11.6, 1920), Nukumai (11.1,1 1928) and Padishah (11.7, 1939). Beau Vite Colt The season should not be very old when Liebestraum wins a race. The Beau Vite colt was noticed putting in good work just behind the placed lot in the Cashmere Plate. He was got from the New Zealand Cup winner Serenata. Running out of Hacks Copper Coin should continue to pay her way when she goes into open company. She is running out her hack engagements at Riccarton, and carried the steadier of 10.2 into fourth place on Saturday. Prominent Throughout
Julius Caesar was one of the pacemakers all the way in the Paparua Handicap, and provided he holds his form he should soon win a stake. A four-year-old by Beaulivre, he was got from Lackalady by Lackham, from Jean Laddo. by Sir Laddo from Jeanne d’Arc, by St. Andrew.
