CLUTHA RIVER TRUST
Sir —I see by the engineer’s report to the' Clutha River Trust that the mouth of the river is silting up, due, of course, to the low state of the river. On the other hand, there is a possibility of a catchment board being formed to control the flow of water at flood times. Now, sir what keeps our river-mouths open? Floods, of course. Yes, but we must protect the town of Balclutha and all the farms on the flat! Well, the town has been saved for 69 years, due to the existing banks. For the River Trust to spend £I6OO at the mouth is a waste of money, as a rough sea could undo the work in n few davs or hours. , To my mind the trust should build the banks wider and higher. That would do much more good to the country than working at the mouth. We do not want to be called up in the middle of the night to fill bass with sand Build the banks in daylight.—l am, etc., Mack.
