EXCLUSION OF WIGHT
GOLF COUNCIL’S VIEW Provided that the New Zealand Golf Council takes steps to ensure that it has control over all major golf events in the Dominion and that points in dispute will, in consequence, be settled by the highest authority, no good purpose will be served by prolonging discussion of the controversy arising from the professionals’ efforts to exclude T. W. Wight from the golf tournament in Auckland. One point made by a local golfer is, however, worth placing on record. He pointed out that the name of the event was the “ Victory ” Tournament, and he sug-. gested that it was strange that the professionals’ efforts should be directed towards excluding from the play a man who had given up several years of his life to make that victory possible. The attitude of the New Zealand Golf Council was explained in an interview by the secretary, Mr G. O. Sutton. “The matter has nothing to do with our association,” he said. “ Everything depends on the conditions laid down in the programme. No conditions relating to professionals were made in the programme, and there was no mention in it of a restriction of the professional entry to members of the Professional Golfers' Association.” This statement appears to write “ finish ” to the professionals' case.
