ASSOCIATION FOOTBALL

The majority of last Saturday’s games were evenly contested, the best of the series being the Green Island-Roslyn-Wakari match. Both sides gave a fine display, and it was Roslyn’s best combined effort this season. With 20 minutes left for play, it appeared that Hoslyn would prove the winners, but brilliant work by Taylor, who scored three clever goals, put Green Island in the lead. Old Boys, with Foote again at centre, showed a return to form, but were unable to score against Mosgiel. Steven, Bryce and Martin providing stiff opposition. Nicholson will be a regular member of the Taieri side for the remainder of the season, and should greatly strengthen its attack. Southern was out of luck in its encounter with Northern A, and the north enders 'freely admitted that they were lucky to win. Finlayson, inside right for Northern, showed a fine understanding of inside forward play. He possesses a nice body swerve, plays over the ball, and is generally travelling in the opposite direction to that in which he intends to make his pass, a valuable asset in any forward. R. Steven, Mpsgiel’s veteran leftback, after playing for 16 years in the one position, is equal to any one playing in local circles to-day. and his exhibition of clean kicking, heading and fine positional play against High School Old Boys was good to witness. Local followers will be pleased to know that W. Rogers, ex-Mosgiel and Otago inside-right, is back in the game, playing for Thistle, Christchurch. As Rogers is still young, it would not be surprising to find him catching the selector’s eye, as he has ability above the ordinary.

OLD BOYS’ CAPTAIN The captain of the High School Old Boys’ senior hockey team this season. Doug. Lockhart, has proved his ability not only on the hockey field, but also on the administrative side of the game, having been a member Of the Management Committee of the Otago Hockey Association for the past two years. Lockhart commenced playing hockey at the Otago Boys' High School in 1933. and was a member of the school's first eleven in 1935-36. On leaving school he played for the Training Collegefirst eleven during 1937-38. and joined the High School Old Boys' Club in 1939, He served in the RNZAF as pilot, and on his discharge in 1945 rejoined the High School Old Boys’ Club in 1946, and played as right-half, obtaining representative honours in that position last season. This season he is playing as left-half for Old Boys.

HAMMER CHAMPIONSHIP In granting permission for the New Zealand Track and Field Championships- to be held at Carisbrook next summer, the Otago Rugby Football Union has imposed a condition that the Hammer Throwing Championship shall not be held on that ground. It is understood that the Otago Centre proposes holding this event at the Caledonian Ground in the morning. A standard order of events for national championship meetings is incorporated in the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association's rules, and the national body's sanction will be required to make the change suggested indeed, it is possible that a notice of motion to alter the rules may be necessarv.
