ENGLISH GIRL GUIDES
NO UNIFORMS OR BOOKS The following is an extract from a letter from Mrs D. Orchard, secretary of the Royal Navy Friendly Union of Sailors, in Surrey, England, to Mrs J. Sutherland Ross, an executive member of the Girl Guides’ Association of Otago and president of the Navy League in gratitude for guiding material sent to England:— “ I received a parcel from you containing children’s tovs and garments. Very many thanks indeed, because the contents are most useful, especially the guide's blue cotton uniform and the guide books—they just fit a very nice guide here. It is very difficult to get anything now for guides as books are either out of print and coupons are too valuable for uniforms. For years I was a Brown Owl both in Devonshire and Malta, and had a great deal of good work to do while in Malta. We were the English Division of Girl Guides, and I had all the naval children as Brownies. I found my guide training very useful indeed, especially as I began late in life—my only brother was one of the original Scouts in London.”
