DEMAND TO COUNCIL
PEACE WITH COMMUNISTS CRITICAL SITUATION IN MANCHURIA Rec. 9.30 p.m. NANKING, May 25. The Democratic League has sent a memorandum to the People’s Political Council demanding a genuine new attempt to negotiate peace with the Communists. No action by the Council is reported, but Manchurian delegates violently criticised the Government army command for the critical Manchurian military situation. They contended that some officers are busy smuggling opium and others are having a gay time in dance halls, while the Communists advance. The Mayor of Shanghai. Mr K C Wu, said that the populace of Kiangsu province was facing an acute food shortage and the present chaotic situation was most critical. Since the Japanese surrender, rice prices have continued to soar with the shortage accentuated by an influx of nearly 1.000,000 peasants who have gone to Shanghai in the last few months seeking food. The anti-war strike of university students in China’s large cities has spread to Canton, while Shanghai students threatened new demonstrations unless the police freed all those arrested in the last two days.
