ESCAPES FROM MOB

NEGRO IN FEDERAL HANDS

Rec. 10 p.m. WASHINGTON, May 25. The Federal Bureau of Investigation announced that it has taken into custody Godwin Bush, the North Carolina negro who was taken from a prison cell at Northampton last week by a mob. It had been feared that Bush had been killed He was originally arrested on a charge of attacking a white woman. The FBI said that Bush was now being questioned to ascertain whether any of his civil rights have been violated (The violation of civil rights is practically the only ground on which the Federal authorities can intervene in State criminal matters.) The FBI refused to disclose how Bush escaped from the mob, but the district solicitor considers that Bush escaped right in front of the gaol and bolted into the darkness.

A previous message stated that three armed, masked men seized a negro prisoner from the Northampton County gaol, North Carolina, at 2 a.m. Sheriff Stephenson said he feared the negro had been lynched. A gaoler named Edwards said that the armed men said: “ Deliver him up. or else.” Thereupon he unlocked the cell door and permitted the men to take the negro into the street, where they were joined by a small group, and all vanished.
